Adat Perpatih
  • this set of rules are originally exist in minangkabau,sumatera
  • sets of rules or system that still being implemented by malaysians in 6 districts of N9:
    1. Jelebu
    2. Jempul
    3. Kuala Pilah
    4. Rembau
    5. Seremban
    6. Tampin

Factor differences with other traditions:

  • Emphasis descent through the maternal lineage
  • has its own constitution in “perbilangan” (guidance on the most ideal location to live)

System of adat perpatih:

  • eternal ways of life
  • laws that implement replications and fines
  • formal charges in single agreement or transaction that have characteristics of taxes
  • implementation of regulations in performing activities
  • law of nature

Keys of principle:

  • Sons of mothers treated by consanguinity
  • Accommodation is in the principal's wife
  • Women inherit the estate, the man held the perennial
  • Marriage is prohibited “seperut”
  • An outsider can become a member of a tribe

Adat Perpatih mempunyai lima prinsip utama:

  1. Sons of mothers treated by consanguinity: Traditional Perpatih give special privileges to women who are considered the biological mother of the mother who gave birth to the members of the community. A person is a member of her tribe and non-members of his tribe.
  2. Accommodation is in the principal's wife: When a marriage takes place, the man will leave his hometown and his wife settled in the capital as people related by marriage. In the old days the men would cultivate the land her family.
  3. Women inherit the estate, the man held the perennial: Only men are entitled to hold only perennial (in the customary positions) while the women were inheriting the estate of his mother's family.
  4. “Seperut” marriage or a quarter is prohibited: In a belly and quarters, the relationship is close and the man regarded her in the stomach or the tribe is his sister. Vice versa. By that marriage rates among these is prohibited. Women who are married to each tribe would lose their right to inherit the estate of his mother while the men will lose the right to hold any positions in customs.
  5. An outsider can become a member of a tribe: For the purpose of marriage or the heirs inherit, allowed outsiders to become members of a quarter of the way through the ceremony berkedim. In this ceremony someone will swear allegiance and brotherhood with members of the tribe to be participated.
